In the period of democratic revolution, Mao Zedong emphasized, without intellectuals, the victory of the revolution is impossible. In period of reform and opening up, Deng Xiaoping pointed out, in our country, the strength of the national strength, the size of the economic development, more and more depends upon the quality of laborers and upon the quantity and quality of intellectuals. And in the new century new stage, Hu Jintao stressed, talent problem is a key issue in the party and national undertaking development. Xi Jinping pointed out that we should pay more attention to intellectuals and maximize the intelligence of intellectuals. Intellectuals, therefore, are important power to promote the development of China’s revolution, reform and constructions. It is also one theoretical and practical problem we have been trying to explore how to give full play to the leading role of the intellectual.This paper focuses on intellectuals in the May 4th period, and a comprehensive analysis on intellectual revolutionary in this period is tried to be made. The period selected, from New Culture Movement in 1915 to the eve of the foundation of Communist Party of China 1921, is an epoch-making significant time, with sharp contradictions at home and abroad especially and extremely social disorder, in Chinese history, during which China’s society transformed from the Old Democratic Revolution to the New Democratic Revolution. The Great October Socialist Revolution in 1917 made the world into a new era. New hope was brought for the oppressed peoples around the world, and Marxism for China. As one class awakened first time in the history, intellectuals in May Fourth period rose rapidly, who has become an important force leading the development of the society. Under the influence of the October Socialist Revolution in Russia, those intellectuals began to observe the world with Marxism as their new theoretical weapon, and attempted to combine with broad working masses, explored a new revolutionary road.This paper firstly describes the specific performance of revolutionary intellectuals in May Fourth Movement, and analysis of their features from four aspects is presented; then analyzes revolutionizing reasons of intellectuals in May Fourth period from side of social background, New Culture Movement and October Revolution; finally focuses on the historic significance and contemporary value generated by intellectuals’ revolutionization in the May Fourth Movement, some analysis is attempted to make on intellectuals differentiation and transmutation in late May Fourth period.
