A Study On Subjectivity And Intersubjectivity In E-C Translation Of Runaway From The Perspective Of Hermeneutics

Runaway is Canadian writer Alice Munro’s collection of stories and the winner of the Giller Prize for 2004. It contains eight stories about women who try to escape from the family, self and sex. The book reveals the estrangement and loneliness of modern women. Until now, there is only one Chinese version of Runaway, which is translated by Li Wenjun. And there isn’t any paper studying the Chinese version from the perspective of translation. As one of the best collections of Alice Munro, it is necessary and significant to study it from the perspective of translation.The thesis chooses Li’s Chinese version of Runaway to examine the translator’s subjectivity during the translation process from the perspective of hermeneutics. By literature review, comparison, case study, statistics and description, the thesis points out that the translator’s subjectivity mainly embodies in two aspects:the translator’s "creative treason" and his limitations during the translation process. Historical understanding is the premise that translator conducts creative treason. In Runaway, the translator acts on his initiative by creative treason in translating rhetorical devices, cultural images and stylistic words. History is effective by having influence on the understanding of human beings. Effective history in some conditions confines the translator’s understanding and interpreting. In Runaway, the translator’s limitation is represented by under-translation and over-translation as well as mistranslation.The process to achieve the harmonious intersubjectivity among source language writer, translator and target language readers is also the process of fusion of horizons. In Runaway, the translator tries to balance the relations with different subjects by information compensation and zero translation. Footnotes and zero translation are two of the techniques the translator uses in the translating Runaway to preserve the original style of the source language text.The thesis provides a perspective for the study of the Chinese version of Runaway and for the target language readers’ understanding of it, and at the same time offers a reference for the might-be re-translation in the future and for the translation of Alice Munro’s other works.
