The cohesion theory put forward by Halliday and Hasan has increasingly important influence on translation, in which lexical cohesion is one of the major cohesive devices. This paper is a report of a translation project, which discusses the role lexical cohesion theory played in E-C translation of detective novels based on the excerpt translation of The Angel of Terror. In the thesis, lexical cohesion’s function on discourse coherence is analyzed from synonymy, antonymy, relationship between super-ordinate and hyponym, generalized word and collocation as well as the different translation strategies taken by translator in respective situation. The study of the translation of The Angel of Terror shows that the lexical cohesion theory can sometimes serve as an effective way to achieve accurate understanding of certain confusing lexical items in the source text so as to avoid potential mistranslation while the correct choice of cohesive devices during translation will enhance the readability of target text.
