Narrative Study Of Chinese Gay Theme Movies Under The Perspective Of Cultural Transmission

Chinese gay theme film has gone through 20 years of development. As one of the important ways of cultural transmission, Chinese gay theme film has a very important role in the spread of the gay subculture, improving gay community’s awareness and understanding of their living conditions. Chinese gay theme film reflects the social reality, the causes of homosexuality, love life, sex life and marriage from different angles and levels, changing mainstream society views on homosexuality. In this paper, communication theory, narrative theory and aesthetics theory have been used, to explore the characteristics and laws of the narrative content, strategy and imagery aspects.This paper reviews the development of the phenomenon of homosexuality and Chinese gay movies. It follows that Chinese gay film has experienced four periods, these are a secret period before the nineties, to break the taboo of the nineties, the commercialization period after 2000, and the low tide period after 2010. And now, the Chinese gay film development is relatively slow, and still looking for a new breakthrough.The second chapter is about the narrative content of Chinese gay theme film, combining the causes of homosexuality, emotional life, marriage life and so on. The presentation of gay subculture is selective, it tends to exhibit the bright side of homosexuals in the emotional loyalty, the pursuit of unity between sex and love, frustration and contradictions in traditional marriages, etc. In terms of the changing of content selection and the social environment over time, the film narrative content is also changing. On the basis of Chinese gay theme film development process,the third chapter discusses its narrative strategies. The main theme of the film narrative strategies used by the mainstream culture of cover narrative, homosexual themes narrative, gay and business combination narrative. This is closely linked by with social acceptance of homosexuality and official attitudes on this issue. Last, the paper studies the Chinese gay theme film narrative imagery, analyzed element of Chinese drama as a movie assisted imagery, meaning and role of body image and other images of gay themes, like butterflies, bridges.
