Study On Thought Of Coastal Defense Of Xue Fucheng

Content: In the late Qing Dynasty, the Western powers came to China across the ocean, and brought a huge impact to China traditional coastal defense by their great military power. After the Opium War,Lin Zexu and Wei Yuan have been aware of the huge gap between Western and Chinese Navy,and put forward the proposition of ” Learning Merits from the Foreign to Conquer the Foreign”.After the Second Opium War, the westernization movement grew rapidly, the diffusion of Western Learning accelerated. With the Japanese invasion war and the Sino-French War broke out, coast defense crisis has intensified.This made the development of the modern coastal defense of late Qing Dynasty either in court or in the social elite have widespread, Xue Fucheng’s thought of coastal defense is one of the extremely important representative.This article is divided into five parts to introduce Xue Fucheng’s thoughts of coastal defense. The first part is the reason of the production of his thoughts of coastal defense. It contains the internal and external reasons of the formation of Xue Fucheng’s thought of coastal defense from four aspects.The second part describes Xue Fucheng’s strategic thought of coastal defense, it analyzes three coastal defense strategic thoughts of Xue Fucheng. The third part describes Xue Fucheng’s Coastal defense tactics,it mainly analyzes Xue Fucheng’s thought of coastal defense in the Sino-French War and come back from Western Europe.The fourth part describes Xue Fucheng’s thought of the coastal defense construction, it discusses in detail weapons, coastal defense personnel and coastal infrastructure. The fifth part analyzes the characteristics of Xue Fucheng’s thought of the coastal defense,and on this basis, make an Objective evaluation of Xue Fucheng’s thought of coastal defense.
