A Study On The Border Dispute Between The Tang And The Tubo Dynasty

Throughout the ancient Chinese history, the relationship between the central plains and the border ethnic is complex.In the long process of development, dynasties rose and fell. And the national territory varied from time to time. The Tang dynasty was the most prosperous period of our country. As a southwest ethnic regime, the Tubo period had as long as two hundreds’ communication history with the Tang dynasty. Although the tang and the Tubo dynasty had a good relationship at the beginning, they staged military conflicts at times at the same time. The most arresting feature of the relationship between them is the coexistence of peace and war.The border dispute was complex and varied from time to time. The Tang Dynasty had mainly taken three ways to setting the border dispute:marriage, vow and war. And the war was the last resort. The first chapter introduced the purpose, significance and content of this study, and summarized research actuality and expectation of the Chinese frontier research and the Tang’s frontier questions. The second chapter described the boundary conditions between the Tang Dynasty and the Tubo Dynasty. And the goals, principles and the specific methods to solve these border issues were also in this chapter. The third chapter gave a detail overview of the process of marriage between the tang and the Tubo Dynasties, and analyzed the effect of the marriage-policy. The forth chapter introduced the vows between the Tang Dynasty and the Tubo Dynasty when the Tang Dynasty facing the east development of the Tubo Dynasty. And this chapter also analyzed the reasons, meaning and lessons of the vow-policy. The fifth chapter gave a overview of the conflicts fighting for Tuyuhun, the West Region, Nanzhao, and the Helong Area between the two regimes. These wars had a lot influence on the Tang and the Tubo Dynasty.From the content, we can see that the spirit of cosmopolitanism and humanism is kept firmly in mind by the government rulers of the Tang Dynasty. At the same time, we see that the comprehensive national strength is in need to guarantee the national security, especially the powerful military strength is in need. No matter they are in peace or war, both the Tang Dynasty and the Tubo Dynasty are the members of the unified multinational country, and also both of them plays a momentous role to the significance of the Chinese pluralistic society.
