Abstract/Summary:
As one of the Caribbean excellent English post-colonial writers, V.S. Naipaul and his works continued to win the attention of people. As an immigrant writer, think out of his cultural attribution, Naipaul has three trips back to the ancestors of the state---India to search for the roots, and travel literature "Indian trilogy" arises at the historic moment. In the three trips home, The position of Naipaul’s study on India’s culture is chang ing constantly, and India also presents a different style. This cultural shift not only make s Naipaul’s attitude toward his home country gradually from exclusion to agreement that led to his local reflection on the home country. This paper takes the "Indian trilogy", An Earn of Darkness, India: A wounded Civilization, India: A Million Mutinies Now,as the research object. The writer contacts the post-colonial theory, analyzes the transformation of Naipaul’s attitude on India’s emotional and value orientation in the combination of eastern and western cultures, and then discusses the context of globalization of Naipa ul profound thinking of Indian civilization reconstruction.The first part of this thesis is the introduction.It mainly introduces Naipaul’s life and his works.Also,it makes a summary on the research statuses of domestic and abroad.The significance and the research methods have been put forward in this part.The main body is from Chapter 2 to Chapter 5. In Chapter 2, the dirty and messy phenomenon of India presented under Naipaul’s perspective of Orientalism in An Area of Darkness is discussed and the reason that Naipaul had the antagonistic attitude is analyzed; Chapter 3 focuses on the sympathy that Naipaul revealed in India : A Wounded Civilization and interprets his thinking and criticizing toward bleak status of India; In Chapter 4, starting from India:A Million Mutinies Now, according to carding of the interviews of various people, the author analyzes Naipaul’s longing to motherland and the affective commitment under the global perspective; In Chapter 5, the principal line is the change of Naipaul’s cultural stand and eyeshot in "Indian trilogy" and the emphasis is his critical reflection of Indian local culture and his consideration of reconstruction of the national spirit. Indian local culture and the national character are defective both in the internal contradiction and the conflict with foreign civilization,which is the deep-rooted reason why India barely had any resistibility to the foreign invasion for thousands of years, and the key point of the dilemma after the independence. Hereto, Naipaul thought that the reborn and reconstruction cannot be separated from the fusion of civilization.The conclusion makes a summary about the thesis.Not only can the "Indian t rilogy" cause Indian’s introspection,it also bring meaningful inspiration to both t he Third World Countries devoted to rebuilding their homes and other nationaliti es taken part in the global civilized construction...
