Generally speaking, Shuyu is a term from Russia, which has many meanings and so far doesn’t have a unified concept. This paper discusses the generalized Shuyu including the idiom, the proverb, the two-part allegorical saying, colloquial, etc.As one of the important parts of lexicology, Shuyu has relatively fixed structure and rich semantic connotation, vivid expression, etc. In today’s society, politics, economy, culture, education becomes globalized. With the frequent exchanges between countries, a growing number of people are learning Chinese. Shuyu is not only the “hot potato” for teachers, but also the barriers for Chinese learners. There are many Shuyu in domestic Chinese Teaching Materials, such as Public Chinese、 New Standard Chinese 、Development Chinese and most of them are English annotations. For those learners whose mother tongue is English, the English annotations can help them understand Chinese Shuyu.Many scholars both at home and abroad have studied Shuyu from the usage, the structure, the rhetoric devices, etc. Also, other scholars studied the English annotation of Shuyu from the methods: literal translation, free translation and synonymous English Shuyu. Almost nobody analyzed the meaning and culture factor missing in Chinese Teaching Materials, so this paper mainly study the problems in English annotation of Shuyu and the causes of the problem. The author finds out the reasons are the improper translation methods and the difference between Chinese and English culture.
