Abstract/Summary:
The research object of the master’s thesis is Linguaphone Oriental Language Courses: Chinese by school of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in the late 1920 s.The content mainly dominated by the translation method and provided for the westerners to learn morden Chinese at that time. It is rich in content, brief in form, and easy to understand.This is a muture co-edited textbook in teaching Chinese as a foreign language which improve students’ comprehensive skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. This article is divided into six chapters according to the teaching order.The first chapter is introduction, which explains the paper’s research object, research significance and research status, the theories and the methods adopted as well as the sources of the materials will be put forward in this chapter.The second chapter summarizes the content and background of this book,and introduces the compilation team which constituted by professional phoneticians and famous linguists, for instance, Daniel Jones, A. Lloyd James, J. Percy Bruce and C. C.Shu,etc..The third chapter analyzes the teaching of pronounciation. It claims Aural-Oral first, uses international phonetic alphabets to instead of Wade orthography which is very popular at that time, and improves the pronounciation system according to the characterastics of British students and foundation of Pinyin strategy of A Phonograph Course in the Chinese National Language by Yuan-ren Chao. It describes Chinese initial, finals and tones in detail by compared to the relative languages to highlight its characteristics. As while, this course also provides the Musical representation of Peking tones and sum up the rules of tones modified by position.The fourth chapter runs through the gradual process of teaching of vocabulary and grammar. This book chooses the appropriate, extensive vocabulary with distinctive characteristics of the times. But still has the problem of too much vocabularies and low repition rate.The fifth chapter analyzes the teaching of Chinese characters of this book. This course takes the formations, strokes, and radicals of Chinese charaters seriously. Because of the non-systematic way, teaching of characters still in the subordinate status. They make the Chinese grammar more easy to understand and adopt by using the vocabulary teaching instead of grammar teaching, and the English grammar to ayalyzes Chinese grammar phenomenonThe last part is the basic evaluation of Linguaphone Oriental Language Courses:Chinese.This is the first muture co-edited textbook in teaching Chinese as a foreign language as well as the first try to adopt the gramophoneto assist the language teaching.It’s an excellent primary Chinese spoken materials which has comprehensive structure, convenient to use in the end of 1920 s.
