The Research Of Functions On Duplication Of Monosyllabic Adjectives In Adverbial Position

Monosyllabic adjectives are the most typical adjectives and the nucleus of adjectives,with the most essential and typical characteristics of adjectives.We can find a phenomenon in adjectives:a part of the monosyllabic adjectives can be used as adverbial modifiers directly.Besides,the duplication of monosyllabic adjectives can also be used as adverbial modifiers,for example,“粗看、粗粗一看”,“冷笑、冷冷地笑了”,“紧握、紧紧地握住”etc.Another part of the monosyllabic adjectives can not be used as adverbial modifiers directly.To reach this point,they have to be overlapped,such as“*圆画、圆圆地画了一个圈”,“*美吃、美美地吃上一顿”,“*脆炸、脆脆地炸了盘花生米”etc.A structure of“AA(+地)+VP”is denoted to describe the usage of overlapped monosyllabic adjectives as adverbial modifiers.Based on the linguistic facts,this thesis investigates and analyzes the duplication of monosyllabic adjectives in adverbial position in details from different aspects.Furthermore,it will particularly describe and explain semantic features and pragmatic functions.Chapter Ⅰ sums up the research achievement of predecessors and analyses research status. On this ground we bring forward the purpose and significance of the topic. We will elaborate the theoretical foundation and research methods.Chapter Ⅱstudies the selectional restriction of the structure “AA(+地)+VP” on AA and syntactic forms of VP. We merge and organize all the adjectives in the books as follows:Detailed Information Grammar Dictionary in Contemporary Chinese by Yu Shiwen、Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese Adjectives’ Usage by Zheng Huaideand Meng Qinghai. According to the two books, a monosyllabic adjective table is summed up and to be the scope of our study. Meanwhile, we also study the syntactic forms of VP and make detailed descriptions of 地 in this structure.Chapter Ⅲ analyzes the semantic restriction on AA and VP in this structure“AA(+ 地)+VP”.On the basis of massive examples, semantic types of AA and semantic features of VP will be summarized. The semantic orientations of AA will be also studied.Chapter Ⅳstudies the semantic functions of AA in this structure.Chapter Ⅴfirstly, we focus on the pragmatic functions and textual functions of the structure “AA(+地)+VP”. Then we make a comparative study between “AA(+地)+VP” and “A(+地)+VP” from the aspect of syntax, semantics and pragmatic.Chapter Ⅵ summaries the main point of this thesis, illustrates the further study needed and the deficiencies of it.
