Since the self-reference effect was found by Rogers in 1977, it received a lot ofattention by researchers for its advantages rather than its disadvantages. In recentyears, some researchers found that while self-reference could improve the accuracy ofmemory, it also could make memory false(Zhou Chu, Wang Jianqin, Zhou Wenjia,2014). So this study will discuss this controversy based on the classical paradigm ofself-referential processing. This research includes three experiments: Experiment One discusses theinfluence on false memory by the subjects in different ages based on the vocabularyof self-reference processing; Experiment Two explores the influence to the falsememory between young and elder people further based on the events of self-referenceprocessing; Experiment Three put forward a way to improve the false memory ofelderly people and confirms the feasibility of this method on the basis of ExperimentOne and Two.The results show that:(1) The memory of old citizens has the self-referenceeffect truly.(2) Both young and old people could have wrong memory when theywere in the process of self-reference on vocabulary and events. High self-referencepeople could have more false memory than people in low self-reference, and thisleads to net incomes lower in high self-reference processing than in low self-referenceprocessing.(3) Point trace could make memory wrong, and literal trace can reduce theoccurrence of false memory.(4) Improving the attention to details could have adifferent influence between the young and the old. Although it has a negative impacton young people, it can significantly reduce the false memory of the old which iscaused by the self-reference processing, and finally increases the net incomes.
