| Alain Robbe-Grillet is the founder of the French new novel school in twentieth century. The new novel school was a rising power of literature in France after World War II and got much attention at that time. In this paper, I am trying to use the method of comparison and reading carefully to study on Robbe-Grillet’s works of fiction and literary concepts, aiming to decide whether Robbe-Grillet’s novels is new novel, and if so, new ideas embodied in the novel should be found.Robbe-Grillet’s novels subvert the established order of the traditional novel in many ways, setting off huge waves in the literary world. He publicly criticized traditional novelists represented by Balzac. And he was opposed to shaping the typical characters, to describing history; he used imitation instead of truth, and used conversion instead of steadiness. He created a new literary form:fuzzy characters, no plot, he established a maze for readers to go on writing novels.Robbe-Grillet’s novels reflect new writing skills. As he said, the new novel should provide a new form to convey a new relationship between human and the world. He also expressed new ideological contents:postmodernism which included absurd theme, lots of content of describing objects and inhuman concept. His novels reflect new thinking of the world after World War II, in his view, the world exists independently. The evaluation of Robbe-Grillet’work is very different. Robbe-Grillet established a new novel concept when defending his novels, and the new novel became an important part of French literature eventually. The new novel was a revolution; Robbe-Grillet used his own works as experimental subjects, trying to describe the new relationship between human and the world. In the call of Robbe-Grillet’s "new novel", some of the fiction writers who have new insights were gradually developed into a full-fledged school, and had a great impact then. Robbe-Grillet’s novels reached the standard of new novel he considered, its skills and thoughts played a positive role to improve the future novels, but he put too much emphasis on the form of his novels, so that readers were not able to be satisfied at all, which left some regret. |
