Yuen Ren Chao And Teaching Chinese As A Foreign Language

Yuen Ren Chao is a brilliant man with wide knowledge, in many research fields, especially in the linguistic attainments on study. Based on the language study, he studied by the modern scientific method of speech, on Modern Chinese grammar,intonation, dialect and so on. He’s work is very rich. He was known as the twentieth Century international linguists, and the Chinese modern linguistics pioneer and founder, who was hailed as the "father of China linguistics".In this paper,based on the analysis of American foreign language teaching practice, the author focused on Mr. Chao’s contribution and Enlightenment to contemporary teaching Chinese as a foreign language.This thesis is divided into five chapters:The first chapter mainly explained the significance of the research topic, research status at home and abroad, and the innovation of this paper and the problems to be solved and the measures.The second chapter of this thesis is the main part. In which Yuen Ren Chao’s view of language is explained. The main story of Mr. Chao’s view of language and the content of the view of language. Influenced by language learning experience, talent and structuralismas, he set foot on Chinese research and Chinese teaching road foundation.The third chapter inspects the practice of teaching Chinese as a foreign language with Mr. Chao. From the early, mid,and the late period of three to study its teaching activities.In early period from the first teach vernacular and classical Chinese teaching for the first time in two aspects to discuss the teaching; middle is the peak, Yuen Ren Chao’s presided over the Chinese training class, make Chinese teaching has reached to an unprecedented scale; the latter has combed the settled in the United States after the Chinese teaching.The fourth chapter mainly discusses the practice of Chinese teaching of Mr. Yuen Ren Chao’s contribution and Enlightenment to contemporary teaching Chinese as a foreign language. In contribution, one is led to USA teaching Chinese as a foreign language in the history of "Vernacular Movement"; the second is the preparation of a complete set of teaching Chinese as a foreign language teaching. In enlightenment, the author mainly discusses the concept of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and teaching Chinese as a foreign language on Contemporary Chinese teaching.The fifth chapter is the conclusion part. According to Mr. Chao’s overseas teaching practice, clear its contribution to foreign language teaching, we hope to be able to engage in teaching Chinese as a foreign language teacher’s help.
