Shuntarou Tanikawa and Gary Snyder are famous contemporary poets. Shuntarou Tanikawa was named "national poet" and "the textbook poet". Snyder is called "Han Shan" in the United States. There are many factors of zen in their poems.Shuntarou Tanikawa and Gary Snyder are old friends more than 30 years. Shuntarou Tanikawa has said Gary Snyder had a great influence on him, and they have similar feelings: both are advocate return to natural. So it is necessary and meaningful to analyze poetic zen factors in their works, and this is a better understanding of the two poets. The author regard it as the basis of thesis writing, in reference on the basis of predecessors’ research results, in the perspective of religion, parallel method, the analysis of the similarities and differences between zen factors in the two poets, as well as their respective of ideology, cultural factors. To explore the reasons of their differences, the poetry research provides a new reference in the future.Chapter one: The first part is the introduction. Brief introduction of the two poets,detailed understanding of the two poets research status at home and abroad. Then this article is written on the basis of those proposed research after finding the gap and the insufficiency of existing research. And summarize the method and the research content in this paper, and make the concept of "zen".Chapter two: The second part analyzes the similarities and differences of zen factors in the emotional connotation between the two poets. It divides into two main parts: the attitude towards nature and the attitude to life. In the attitude towards nature,it analyzes the similar thing “I as view of nature”, and the difference thing that Shuntarou Tanikawa holds personal return way and Snyder cures all beings. In attitude towards life, both live in the present, but one is willing to idle moments of life, the other loves working life.Chapter three: The third part analyzes the similarities and differences of artistic features of zen expression. It divides into two aspects: “Independence of Word” and the alogical expression. First part analyzes the similar thing is the pursuit of concise language, and the difference is that one loves expressed in zen way of question andanswer, the other likes to use a picture. In addition, both are good at free shuttle in space and time, the difference is that Shuntarou Tanikawa often uses the chaos of synaesthesia, Snyder often uses meditation type expression by leaps and bounds.Chapter four: The fourth part analyzes the cultural differences of zen factor.Shuntarou Tanikawa mainly learns from the native of zen Buddhist culture, Snyder learns from Japan zen and the Chinese zen to absorb the beneficial things for his own culture.Chapter five: The fifth part is conclusion. To analyze the zen factors in Shuntarou Tanikawa’s and Gary Snyder’s poems allows us to see the same and different aspects of zen factors between the east and the west clearly, thus it can not only helps us to have a better understand of poetry characteristics of Shuntarou Tanikawa and Snyder, but also helps have a further exchange between the east and the west.
