Gary Snyder is an American famous contemporary Eco-poet, the obvious features of hisworks is that focusing on the melting of the different cultures including Orient culture. Thisdissertation is researched on the acceptance of Gary Snyder to Chinese culture especiallyTaoism and Zen. The first chapter is talking about the relationship between Snyder andChinese culture, pointing out the inevitability for Snyder to accept Chinese culture. Thesecond chapter is talking about the acceptance of Snyder to Taoism, from the perspectives ofnature, society and aesthetics. On nature, Snyder agrees with the attitude of “Tao models itselfafter its nature”. On society, Snyder accepts the idea “simplicity” and “quietness” of life; healso favors the idea of anti-war and speaks highly of female as Taoism. On aesthetics, Snyderholds the same view as Taoism that the truth should be described and human should beharmonious with nature through intuition. The third chapter is emphasizing on the acceptanceof Snyder to Zen. On Original Mind of Zen, Snyder admits that the core of Zen idea isOriginal Mind. On Lost of Zen, Snyder shows that the reason why Original Mind is lost bythe analysis of his works. On Enlightenment of Zen, Snyder thinks that the content ofEnlightenment is to set up “The One and Only Way” and “Emptiness”, abandon prejudice. Atlast the dissertation emphases that even Snyder accepts Chinese culture, especially Taoismand Zen and put them into practice, but it does not mean Chinese culture plays the main rolein his works, all his works are the mixture of different cultures.
