As a grand masterpiece collection collation of characters, phonology, exegesis, YuPian JiaoShi is so far the most detailed explanatory book of YuPian, which lead it to a high academic value. YuPian JiaoShi combined a large number of etymological characters. Firstly, this paper begins with a brief introduction of YuPian and YuPian JiaoShi, and a summary for the relevant research, defines the basic contents and research methods in its first part. Then according to the statistics, the etymological characters in YuPian JiaoShi is divided into 366 parts,4948 groups in total, with its expression styles of up to 17 species. Through verification of the phonetic and semantic relations of homologous, it can be found that most of the etymological characters in YuPian JiaoShi combined by Hu Jixuan are right, there are also individual argument is inappropriate. Thirdly, there are differences and similarities between YuPian JiaoShi and Duan Yucai’s Annotation on ShuoWen JieZi in expression style, main combination methods and the phonetic system. At the same time, Hu Jixuan’s academic thought of etymological characters includes the inheritance and innovation of Duan Yucai, and he also dares to break through the established theory and shows an rigorous attitude. Finally, this paper analyses the achievements and insufficiencies of etymological character in YuPian JiaoShi. Its achievements are to combine a large number of etymological characters and deepen the academic ideas of etymological character. The defects are that the meaning of the words is less specific, and the judging basis is insufficient or wrong. In a word, YuPian JiaoShi is a masterpiece in using etymological character, which occupies an important position in the history of Chinese philology.
