Understanding And Translation Of Cultural Information In Huangdi Neijing

Huangdi Neijing includes two parts of Plain Conversation and Spiritual Pivot. This masterpiece is not only the earliest extant theoretical classics of traditional Chinese medicine, but also a cherished canon of ancient culture, loading the ancient philosophy and other traditional Chinese culture. When reading both of the English versions separately translated by Ilza Veith and Li Zhaoguo, the author finds there are some errors caused by the translators’ misunderstanding or incomplete understanding to cultural information, and there are still some problems about unfaithful expression of Chinese culture.In this thesis, through analyzing the translation trend of Huangdi Neijing and research methodologies of its English version, the author puts forward the proposition of Understanding and Translation of Cultural Information in Huangdi Neijing, and also summarizes the cultural characteristics of Huangdi Neijing. Guided by the theory of cultural translation, via comparing Ilza Veith’s and Li Zhaoguo’s English versions of Neijing, the author demonstrates three perspectives of culture understanding —deconstruction of Chinese characters, analysis of rhetoric and logical reasoning, and then summarizes four translation strategies of culture information, such as literal translation, annotation, paraphrase, and integration compensation.The purpose of this thesis is to provide theoretical reference for further exploration of cultural connotation in Chinese traditional classics, and accurate dissemination of Chinese traditional culture.
