This paper is a translation report. The object of translation is the fourth chapter of Gert Biesta’s latest book Learning Democracy in School and Society. The original chapter mainly probes into the interrelations between democratic thinking and higher education, and emphasizes that both educators and politicians are supposed to realize the importance of higher education in promoting democracy rather than solely focus on its traditional function. This translation report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is a project overview, followed by background information, significance and purposes of the translation project. The second chapter is primarily concerned with the preparations before translation, which introduces the lexical, syntactic features and writing style of the source text. Moreover, with Newmarks’ text typology and communicative translation as the theoretical support, the author offers concrete analysis to the translation steps and difficulties confronted. The third chapter is a comparative study of the differences between Chinese and English and the origins leading to such differences are also involved. The fourth chapter discusses the translation methods which are adopted to deal with the most challenging part of the source text accompanied with examples excerpted from the translation project. The last chapter is a summary of the project. It concludes with the experience gained and some problems to be solved.
