The theory of iconicity, as a hot topic in the academic circle nowadays, is a veryimportant issue in cognitive linguistics. Iconicity is reflected at all levels of language. It is ofgreat value for the analysis of literary works and the study of tanslation, and is also quiteinstructive for foreign language teaching.The present thesis is devoted to giving a comprehensive and systematic research intothe theory of iconicity and at the same time explores how to apply it to the practical teachingof English grammar. To achieve this purpose, the thesis adopts such research methods asqualitative analysis and example analysis. Firstly, the paper presents the overall framework ofthe theory of iconicity and introduces the research of it done both at home and abroad. Thistouches upon the definition, classification, cognitive causes and philosophical basis oficonicity. Secondly, the paper gives a detailed introduction of the application of iconicity inmorphological teaching and syntactical teaching, illustrating with examples how the use oficonicity in English grammar teaching can facilitate students’ understanding of grammaticalrules and thus improve the effeciency of grammar teaching. This provides a new angle foroptmizing the teaching method of English grammar. This paper proves the study of iconicityis not only of great theoretical significance, but is also of great practical value.
