As a sharing phenomenon in every culture, humor differs largely according to variouscultural features. It is closely related to religion, ideology, political system, custom and soon. Although many scholars from the perspective of literature, art, psychology, linguistshave studied humorous language, few have studied from the perspective of translationunder the guidance of a suitable translation theory. In translation, it is believed that humortranslation is as difficult as poetry translation. During the process of translation,unavoidable cultural differences bring much obsession to translators. From the perspectiveof humor function and translation purpose, the thesis aims to make a deep research ofhumor translation.Under the guidance of Skopostheorie, which is the core of German functional theory,the thesis has made analysis and research on humor translation. First, the author elaboratesthe origin, development and status of the Skopostheorie, in which the author believes theprimary purpose of humor translation is to make the target text shares the convergence inrelated aspects as source text. Therefore the translator must be the bridge in the translationprocess. Mo Yan’s work Cattle is taken as an example to analyze humor translation theoryand strategy on the basis of Skopostheorie. Conclusion, which is expected to be helpful totranslators in humor translation, is drawn as follows: with a goal of recover the humoreffect in the source text, translator should adopt target culture’s custom, choose suitablestrategy, so as to present the humor in the target text for the target reader to understand.
