A Contrastive Study Between Interpreting And Translating Texts Of Zhu Rongji Meets The Press

Belonging to two different genres, translating and interpreting definitely show somedifferences. In the practical point, the English version of Zhu Rongji Meets the Press has greatdifferences in word usage, syntax and other aspects with the online interpreting text; therefore,it is worth studying these differences and finding out the reasons. However, current studies oninterpreting and translating were unfolded as single-object study, ignoring the differentlanguage features in different forms of text. Especially the papers with foreign affairstranslation as the research topic completely ignored the value of a contrastive analysis of bothstudies.Based on these backgrounds, the study makes use of the specific examples in translatingtext and interpreting text of Zhu Rongji’s answer in press conferences to domestic and foreignmedia from1998-2002, exploring the similarities and differences between translating text andinterpreting text of the same source text in the aspects of language style, word choice,syntactic structure and discourse level, and then concluding the different features fordeepening the understanding of translating and interpreting, providing theoretical andpractical reference to research on contrast mechanism between translating and interpreting aswell as its practical application.Through the detailed analysis, the translating text and interpreting text of the samesource text mainly have similarities and differences at the micro level, such as word usage,sentence structure and textual level. The deep-seated causes of these similarities anddifferences in the translating text and interpreting text mainly focus on three aspects:similarities and differences in spoken and written language types, the effect of short-termmemory and the impact of the translator’s subjectivity. Achievements of this study maketranslators consider the different types of text in translation practice and select the appropriatetranslation strategies in order to achieve a better translation result.The paper firstly described the purpose and significance of the study, proposed the studyissue and research methods, and then briefly introduced the main contents of each chapter.The second chapter had a comprehensive literature review of the theory and practice study in translating and interpreting at home and abroad, which aimed to summarize study on foreignaffairs translation and emphasize its developing history and current research deficiencies. Thethird chapter was the core of this paper, exploring the similarities and differences betweeninterpreting text and translating text from a macro-level and micro-level. Because of thecommon characteristics of foreign affairs translation texts, there was no difference from themacro level between interpreting text and translation text. The paper proceeded to focus onthe micro-level analysis. Based on the analysis of specific examples, combined with relevantliterature reading, the deep-seated reasons causing differences were discussed in ChapterFour. Chapter Five concluded the research, restated the profound significance of the researchand illustrated the research limitation.
