The Study Of Cross-cultural Adaptation Of The Guasha Treatment From The Perspective Of Geert Hofstede’ Cultural Value Theory

In recent years, because of the quick development of information networks andeconomic globalization, the world becomes smaller. Under this situation, the world culturaldevelopment has changed from every country developing independently to every countryinfluencing each other and forming the multicultural coexistence. The different culturesexchange more and more frequently, therefore, the people could no longer only enjoy theirown cultures and they would encounter some difficulties due to the differences betweenChinese and Western cultures when they communicate with each other. The culturaldifferences largely hamper the cultural exchange, which brings much inconvenience to thepeople. For the sake of solving the problems of the cultural differences, the people should findwhat are the differences between Chinese and Western cultures, such as, the differences of thecustoms, the differences of the communicative practices, the differences of the ways ofthinking, or the differences in values.“Cultural Value Theory” was proposed by GeertHofstede who was a Dutch management expert. He conducted a large-scale survey of culturalvalues in the famous multinational IBM (International Business Machines Corporation). Byanalyzing the data in the survey, he concluded five dimensions which measured the values,namely, Power Distance; Individualism and Collectivism; Masculinity and Femininity;Uncertainty Avoidance; Long-Term Orientation and Short-Term Orientation.This thesis includes five parts. The first part, systematically presents the current studiesat home and abroad on Geert Hofstede, cultural adaptation, and the film, Guasha. The secondchapter systematically introduces Geert Hofstede’s “Cultural Value Theory” from five aspects:Power Distance; Individualism and Collectivism; Masculinity and Femininity; UncertaintyAvoidance; Long-Term Orientation and Short-Term Orientation. The third chapter integratescultural value dimensions and cross-cultural adaptation phenomena and shows the specificanalysis on their meeting point. The fourth chapter analyzes the specific situation in the film,Guasha, from the perspectives of the cultural dimensions. The fifth chapter presents the conclusion of the previous chapters, the main findings, the implications and the suggestionsabout how to establish and develop the healthy cross-cultural communication relations.Cultural communication barriers and culture shock is analyzed in order to attract the people’sattention to the cultural differences and culture shock, which prompts more and more peopleto make the investigation on the cultural differences, cultural conflict and cross culturalcommunication. The author wishes that the thesis could start a new perspective on the studyof the cultural value. The film, Gua sha is analyzed from the perspective of the culturaldimensions, which provides the future studies with the useful references and promotes thecommunication and integration of the Chinese and Western cultures.
