During the recent30years, China has experienced the reform and opening-up. As there are more and more international economic and trading activities in China, the new period of translation is coming. In the late1990s, Chinese linguist Liu Miqing divided the practical writing into4categories. They are advertisement, business letter, contract and instruction. The concept of practical writing is opposite to that of literature. The materials of practical writing come from social life, which are based on facts and full of information. The topics of practical writing are business activities, transportation and travel, law, media, science and so on. Undoubtedly, they are well received and well known by people. Nowadays, many schorlars have paid attention to the research on practical translation. The monographs and theses are mainly about business translation, law translation and media translation. Business translation is about the translation of advertisement, business letter and contract, while most of the instruction materials are about science and technology. Thus, this thesis is based on the general instruction materials which are not researched by so many schorlars. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the problems during the process of translating Employment and Career Development for College Students, how theories influence my translation and how my translation testifies the relevant theories. The paper is written from several perspectives: contrast between Chinese and English and cultural elements. There are examples on cultural elements, back translation, the form and context, and polysemy in the paper. In order to achieve equivalence on cultural elements of English and Chinese, literal translation and free translation should be combined and the specific meaning of the source texts should be judged according to the context. The examples of translation should testify the relevant theories rather than limited by them.
