The Study Of Chinese-English Text Structure Translation From The Perspective Of Patterns Of Thought-A Case Study Of China Today

A text is a structural unit with complete meaning, realized by one or more sequences of mutually relevant functions structured in such a way as to serve some overall purpose. Translation in the level of text is basically to convey in one language what is written or said in another language with an essential purpose of representing the communicative value of the original text. It inevitably involves a contrastive study between the source language and the target language. A good knowledge of the similarities and differences between the two languages concerned not only facilitates the translator’s thorough and accurate comprehension of the source text as a whole but provides a reliable foundation for each decision that the translator has to make in the translation. However, the features of text have a close relationship with patterns of thought. This thesis, based on the Chinese and English patterns of thought, explores the differences of English and Chinese text structure on the impact of patterns of thought, aiming at getting some inspirations and techniques for translation.This thesis gives top priority to research originality regarding these aspects as follows:First, the present study in the translation based on text structure is rare. Second, differences of English and Chinese text structure on the impact of patterns of thought are brought into study. Last but not least, the author makes a tentative summary of text structure modifications used in China Today to provide some suggestions for translation, especially publicity translation practice.This thesis consists of four chapters apart from introduction and conclusion, probing into the following issues.Chapter1is the literature review, briefly introduces the present study of Chinese and English patterns of thought, and some basic knowledge about China Today.Chapter2studies the validity of text structure in translation. Some definition concerning the application of text structure to translation, text unit and advantages of text translation are analyzed.Chapter3focuses on a comparative study of Chinese and English patterns of thought. At the same time, it probes into a comparative study of Chinese and English text structure on the impact of different patterns of thought.Chapter4analyzes the techniques used in the English version of China Today on the text structure perspective. Many examples revealing the major methods for text structure modification are illustrated.
