Vietnam lies in the east of Indochina Peninsula with super natural conditionsand rich resource and faces the broad ocean on the east,whose geography ischaracterized by closed and open environment. In fact, the maritime civilization inVietnam depended on the rice civilization on the land. The whole paper consists offour parts. The first chapter explain the meaning of "culture" and "culture ofmarine", briefly addresses the reason of selecting the subject, objectives andsignificance of study, paper frame and corpus sources, introduces the theoreticalbasis and the research status of both domestic and abroad. The second chapter willbase on ancient books to analyze Vietnam’s geographic environments, maritimeculture and its marine nomad to disclose the essence of its maritime culture. In thethird part, this paper will discuss mythologies and the sea gods worship whichreflects the origin of ancient nationality and daily lives. Vietnam, in early stage,wasn’t advanced in ocean exploitation and voyage. This paper, based on itsshipbuilding and maritime technology and Vietnamese maritime words, willdiscuss Vietnam’s maritime cultural connotation. In The fourth chapter, Vietnam,in the early stage, was backward in ocean voyage and shipbuilding. Though itsshipbuilding and maritime technology and ocean voyage reached the top point inthe late18thand early19thcentury, it’s far behind the western countries that weredeveloping rapidly in shipbuilding and maritime technology during the19thcentury.However, Vietnam, bases on its economic innovation progress, undesirably extentits maritime consciousness in the1970s and1980s and move forward to acomprehensive “marine development and security strategy” to realize its “a greatmaritime power” dream.
