With the rapid development of the shipping industry, more standard Maritime English is required. International Maritime Organization has developed Maritime English Model Course in order to promote the training standard on Maritime English for member countries. International Maritime Organization Maritime English Model Course contains some information concerning professional terminology, common pattern as well as the syllabus design and so on, which provides trainees with a good foundation for their future jobs.The subject of this research is Marlins English for Seafarers, which is a textbook used for Maritime English Teaching. This paper examines whether this book matches the requirements of Maritime English Model Course 3.17, published by International Maritime Organization, a series of analyses will be carried out in this paper.This research mainly adopts qualitative analysis and contrastive analysis. Textbook Marlins English for Seafarers was compared with the International Maritime Organization Maritime English Model Course based on the Communicative Approach and some related theories belong to ESP. To be specific, the research was conducted in the four aspects:(1) syllabus design; (2) objective; (3) methodology; (4) learner. The research results show that the textbook Marlins English for Seafarers matches the requirements of the International Maritime Organization Maritime English Model Course, in other words, Marlins English for Seafarers meets the demands of the Maritime English Teaching proposed by International Maritime Organization. What's more, the findings of the research could bring some implications or suggestions in the field of the Maritime English Teaching in China. |
