Yi Wu Xi is a new way of drama performances which emerged in the modern China, mainly refers tothe opera artists’ obligations to play. In the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republican Period (1906-1937),because of the evolutions of society, Yi Wu Xi was more prominent in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai. Inthat time, it played an important role in the ways of social charity undertakings which people participated in.As a case that the traditional Chinese culture changed in modern times, reflects on a certain meaningful andvaluable of cultural significance.In the Late Qing Dynasty, with the changes of modern society, the western’s action namely theobligation to play the drama inspired the advanced Chinese scholars in Shanghai. While “Ding Wu QiHuang” as the background and the journalist actively invoked, eventually to promote the fundraisingthrough drama was born. The fundraising through traditional theater performances applied to become a newchannel for charitable cause. In contrast, the dramatic improvement and the national donation movement inthe Beijing and Tianjin as the background and the “Waihing female school incident” as an opportunity tocontribute to the Yi Wu Xi appeared. The Yi Wu Xi in Beijing and Tianjin broadened the social function ofthe play and surmounted the limitations of Shanghai in one place. These elements laid the foundation forthe development of the Yi Wu Xi.Republic of China (1912-1937) inherited the Yi Wu Xi of development trend in the late Qing Dynastyand exhibited more content. According to the character in this period, I divide the society into conventionalsocial status, natural disaster situation and the war situation. Through the analysis of the specific content ofthe Yi Wu Xi in three social contexts, you can get a glimpse of the Yi Wu Xi which mainly used for internalmutual dramatic profession, help education and medical, relief poverty in winter, famine relief andfundraising war and so on. Overall, the frequency of Yi Wu Xi gradually increased, its scale became larger,its fundraising capability gradually increased, its management diversed more mature types. Yi Wu Xishowed the process from development to mature in the Republic of China (1912-1937).Through specific circumstances of the Yi Wu Xi in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republican Period(1906-1937), its main characteristics exhibited charitable public welfare, social networks, drama diversity and civil subjectivity. Meanwhile the charity for the Yi Wu Xi as the soul, the opera artists as the core, thePeking opera as the main drama, the folk charitable force as an important support, these factors wereintegrated and promoted the development and prosperity of the Yi Wu Xi.Yi Wu Xi as a form of charitable performing arts which born in social metabolism in modern times,showing a good quality namely “share the joy of sharing the same kindness”; Yi Wu Xi had played animportant role of devotion and the main activities of social charity undertakings; With the serious nationalcrisis, under the guidance of patriotic and progressive consciousness, Yi Wu Xi had been raised money toresist aggression; Yi Wu Xi had improved social customs especially theater practices and contributed to thephilanthropic atmosphere of the society. Yi Wu Xi as an entity of the media of performing arts, which wasthe result of the transformation of modern theatrical culture and performance.
