This thesis takes these translations as research object and makes analysis and evaluation. The whole thesis is divided into4parts:the introduction states the reason of choosing this topic and current analysis, and it explains research thoughts and methods used this thesis; Chapter One discusses the background of western art history in republican period, and it concentrates on the elaboration of the reason and conditions of the development of western art history from the perspective of the appearance of art history curricular and the rise of studying-abroad-wave; besides the elaboration of the reason and conditions, the author divides the specific study of translation to two types:textbook-type western art history and non-textbook-type western art history, which are Chapter Two and Chapter Three of this thesis. It is divided in this way because the generation motivations of these two translation types are different. Textbook-type western art history translation comes into being because of the demands of art history teaching, and most of them are translated and edited by translators who have referred to various kinds of foreign books for the convenience of teaching. While non-textbook-type western art history is either translated or edited universal reading materials facing the public, its main characteristics is taking the translation of Japanese books as the principal thing; Chapter Four is a summary of the whole thesis, and it analyses the overall characteristics of western art history from3perspectives:the subject of translation, the influence of translation and the restrictions of translation. Studying these details is conductive to our analysis of several problems that arose during the propagation process of western art history in the republican period, which is favorable to our further research.
