As a form of communication to show the real image, the documentary truly reflects thepeople’s lives, recording the changes of society. From the arena documentary "Dingjunshan" in1905, the documentary have been100years of history. The main distribution channels ofdocumentaries are also changed from cinema and television to new media platforms. Since thenew century, a documentary in the traditional theater, television broadcast became difficult underthe market economy. In contrast, the new media has quietly changed the mode of transmission ofthe documentary, and even replace the traditional media and gradually become the new spreadpositions of documentaries.Through the study, we found that the arrival of a new era brings opportunities and themultiple changes of the documentary. For example, audience expansion, universal creation,multiple topics, marketing novel, movie length miniaturization etc. Meanwhile, we know thedocumentary is also facing severe challenges in the new media age. For example,3D technologychallenged the quality of the documentary, documentary information network information is easyto be overwhelmed, profitability is not optimistic about the documentary new media platforms etc.In this paper, we used communication theory, psychology and economics to analyze newphenomena of the documentary showing in new media age. We summary the spread developmentcontext and make rational thinking documentary. This paper is divided into five parts: The firstpart is an introduction, introduces the research background, purpose and meaning, review relevantresearch and research methods. The second part is the sort of communication context, analyzed itsspread limitations. The third part describes the development status of the documentary in newmedia, focusing on video sites and microblogging. The fourth part through the analysis of theprevious text, describes the opportunities and challenges brings by new media for thedissemination of the documentary. The fifth part is the strategies of the Chinese documentariesdevelopment in the new era of multi-media communication environment.
