A Report On The Translation Of The Good Life For Less

In recent years, domestic residents’ living standards have been greatly improvedthan the ones in the past. While those people in urban require a higher level of the qualityof their daily life, and they are in the hope of living a better life with limited funds.Therefore, it is practical and meaningful in providing similar experiences of foreigners todomestic residents in China, and they could get benefits from it. From the amount ofbooks about living, the translation of the good life for less, chosen by the translator, aimsto introduce the way of living among those average families overseas to people in China,offering quite a few living skills and tricks in different life styles, which can be learnedand helpful to raise living standards and qualities. In the process of this whole translation,“faithfulness” and “expressiveness” are the basic translating strategies used for thepurpose of conveying the real meaning and experience of the author of the book. Besides,some other translating strategies and skills have been adopted properly as well asreferences, and the problems occurring in the process have been solved according to therequirements’ of this translation practice.The translation report consists of four sections. The first section is a description ofthe translation task, including the general introduction of the author, the content and thefeature of the book. And it states the target and value of the translation. The secondsection describes the translating process: the preparation and the arrangement of thetranslating plan. The third section introduces some translation theories used in thetranslating process, sticking to the priority of “faithfulness” and “expressiveness”.Considering the target context’s characteristics,“foreignizing” and “domesticating” arealso used in the translating process, in order to be expressive as well as faithful.Meanwhile some examples based on the translation theories are analyzed in thetranslating process, such as how to deal with some long and difficult sentences, figurativeexpressions, and to choose proper ways of translating recipes. The last section of thereport is the conclusion, summing up the understanding and experience of the translatorfrom this translating practice.
