English writing is a representative of the comprehensive language ability as well as one crucial component of the basic four English skills. Vocabularies, sentence structures, paragraph patterns, passage patterns and writing strategies are the essential elements in English writing. To cultivate writing skills and train the capacity of language expression is one of the main contents in English language teaching of the new materials. The new curriculum standards requires that students can not only make up simple sentences on the basis of learned vocabulary, grammar and sentence patterns, but also more emphasize the accuracy and diversity of expression. And key points of the content, the numbers and accuracy of the vocabularies and grammatical structures used, the coherence of the whole text and the appropriateness of the language are the main assessing basis. So the requirements give a higher writing standard to college students.This experimental research makes a combination of memetics and English writing teaching. After a comprehensive review of relevant literature at home and abroad on English writing teaching, the author put forward a set of relatively complete and effective English writing teaching system:Recitation-Imitation-Creation English teaching model based on the memetics theory and obtained experiment data among non-English major college students.The experiment lasted for three months. Two classes, altogether82sophomores from North China Electric Power University were involved in the experiment. One of the classes was randomly chosen as the controlled class (CC), and the other as the experimental class (EC). During the experiment, the CC was taught with traditional writing teaching methods, while the EC with the Recitation-Imitation-Creation English teaching model to writing teaching. The data of the experiment were collected from two questionnaires and two tests. The questionnaires were carried out before and after the experiment, emphasizing the changes in students’attitudes towards and writing habits in English learning, as well as changes in their writing strategies and evaluation. Through comparison of the two classes, we found some differences in the variation of the changes. The two tests given to the students in the course of the experiment and the topics were both phenomenon types from CET-4writing, with the purpose to examine the degree of students’mastery of the memes, so that the difference in the teaching effects between the traditional writing teaching approach and the Recitation-Imitation-Creation English teaching model based on memetics may come out with the differences of students’performance in the CC and the EC.The results of the teaching experiment indicate:1. The Recitation-Imitation-Creation English writing teaching model based on memetics can help students develop adequate attitudes and interest towards English writing.2. This approach can help students to develop good writing habits and develop independent English writing strategies pertinent to the theories of memetics.3. This approach helps them writing a shot essay in an efficient way.These results show that Recitation-Imitation-Creation English writing teaching model based on memetics is an efficient approach to English writing teaching. |
