This thesis, employing the method of qualitative and quantitative analysis, does aprofound analysis on the translation of vulgar language in the novel The Catcher in theRye written by a famous American writer, J.D. Salinger, which is translated by SunZhongxu. The analysis is conducted from the perspective of Liu Zhongde’s Principles ofFaithfulness, Expressiveness and Closeness, intending to do a research on thetranslation of vulgar language in The Catcher in the Rye and see how the translationreproduce the original successfully. As vulgar language serves as a unique kind of communication form, it is inevitablywidespread in people’s daily life and literature works. The Catcher in the Rye is withextensive use of vulgar language, slang, such as reversed chaos and even highly profanecolloquial language. Vulgar language as a most important language feature in this novelhelps to shape a unique character-Holden with a personality that even though he is notyoung of his age, he remains not grown up psychologically and still rests onintermediate stage of being sophistication-ignorant, innocent and depraved. Holden usesa lot of vulgar language only to reflex his disordered innermost. Therefore, thetranslation of vulgar language seems exceedingly significant to correctly comprehendthis novel. Given the special function of vulgar language in literary works, in-depthtranslation study on it is necessary and meaningful. However, the existing translationbooks or study on the translation of vulgar language study is far from enough. Therelacks a theoretical guidance on the translation vulgar language. This thesis presents anidea that Liu Zhongde’s Principles of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Closeness whichruns through literary translation can also be applied to the practical translation of vulgarlanguage. Through analysis of lots of translation examples, the conclusion can be drawnthat it is because of Liu Zhongde’s Trinity Principles of Faithfulness, Expressivenessand Closeness, which is a dialectical unity and complements each other, which gives thepossibility to reduce the loss of meaning and style of the original text. This practice gives expression to that Liu Zhongde’s Trinity Principles of Faithfulness,Expressiveness and Closeness agrees with the translation of vulgar language to itsutmost. Such a confirmation can be a new angle for further studies and provide certainguiding significance for the practice of the translation of vulgar language.
