A Report On The Translation Of Subtitles Of The Great Gatsby

With numerous of western movies rushing into China movie market, subtitle translation attracts more and more attention. However, the study on subtitle translation is insufficient and the translation of film subtitle does not form criteria. This report intends to study the appropriate techniques and methods of subtitle translation, based on the author’s translation practice of subtitle translation of The Great Gatsby.There are five chapters in this report:introduction, procedure description, theoretical basis, case study and conclusion. The chapters of introduction and procedure description are overall introduction of the report, including the description of the text and the background information. Chapter three presents the theoretical basis of this report. The author introduces the formation of the translator’s subjectivity and how he selects the strategy of domestication under the theory of the translator’s subjectivity in accordance with the features of subtitle in this chapter. And chapter four, the case study, is the main part of this report. Taking the version of The Great Gatsby as the analyzing material, the author focuses on the translation techniques and methods applied in the subtitle translation under the strategy of domestication. And some problems and mistakes in the translation practice are also enumerated and analyzed in this chapter. In the conclusion part, the author summarizes how the translator gives play to his subjectivity and utilizes various methods under appropriate strategy in subtitle translation practice. The author generalizes some experience and achievements in this chapter as well.The report aims at studying translation techniques and methods applied to the translation of the subtitles of The Great Gatsby, making contributions to film subtitle translation. In addition, the author also tries to attract more academic attention, so that subtitle translation might play a more important role in culture exchanges.
