In February2014, the author world premiered Liuxing’s Zhongruan Concerto No.2at the42nd Hong Kong Arts Festival-Music of China VIII. In2001, Ms Lui Kwan On commissioned Liu Xing to compose the concerto (first edition). The first edition, which was completed in2004, was written for Zhongruan and Symphony Orchestra and was rearranged for Zhongruan and Chinese Orchestra for Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in2012.The thesis consists of three parts, including Introduction, Main body and Conclusion. In the introduction part, the author illustrates the purpose and significance of the study. The main body is categorized into three sections, Section1discusses the biography of Liu Xing and his representative Zhongruan compositions; Section2focuses on the musical characteristics of the Zhongruan Concerto No.2, providing a brief analysis of the Zhongruan Concerto No.2; Section3is an analysis of the technical aspects of the Zhongruan Concerto No.2, highlighting the use of the right and left hand performing techniques involved in this concerto. Finally, the Conclusion is a summary of Zhongruan’s future development with reference to the Zhongruan Concerto No.2.The author is very thankful to be able to receive personal guidance under her principal study mentor Mr. Liu Xing, who is also the composer of Zhongruan Concerto No.2. This enables her to experience and understand his interpretations and ideas with regards to the piece. This thesis focuses on technical and artistic aspect, discussing performing techniques and practicing methods for various technical passages. The author hopes that this research will provide a better understanding of Zhongruan Concerto No.2. and that Zhongruan music will continue to develop and flourish.
