The public sign is a word which is accepted by the common peoplein recent years. In fact, it is a kind of channel from which the foreignerscan get the information and understand our culture. With the developmentof internationalization and tourism, the public signs have become animportant part of language and culture. Therefore, the translating qualityof public signs from Chinese to English is closely related with the imageand taste of a city or a country. However, the actuality of the public signstranslation is not optimistic. There are many errors which exist in thetranslation, for example, the misunderstanding about two differentcultures and translation, and the careless when they made public signsand so on. In author’s opinion, the culture and politeness are two mainreasons which cause many misunderstanding in society. On the otherhand, culture and politeness play the important role in the developmentand improvement. Therefore, culture and politeness should be paid muchattention for the public signs translation. In this thesis, the authordiscusses the translation of public signs from the cultural perspective andpoliteness perspective. She collects many examples and analyzed them by using the descriptive explanation and contrastive research methods. As aresult, the author put forward that the public signs translation shouldfollow the principles of politeness and culture. There are someconclusions: first, translation of public signs should abide by some socialrules or habits because of their social characters. Second, the translationof public signs should consider their own practical function. As a matterof fact, the translation is not only a bilingual transmission, but also abicultural communication. Third, the translator should be professional.He or she is regarded as the emissary who conveys two different cultures.As a result, the translator should be a person who contacts and collectsinformation as much as possible in the daily life for his work.
