The internet has become an indispensable part of college students, which influencesevery aspect of their campus life. And internet has being widely accepted among collegestudents as one of the most convenient Computer-Mediated Communication access,which therefore has large impact on individual behavior pattern and psychologicalexperience of the users. What’s most interesting of these impacts are the coping style andloneliness of the internet users. The article is therefore aimed at analyzing relationsamong the internet Computer-Mediated Communication, coping style and loneliness.Questionnaires on Computer-Mediated Communication, coping style and index ofloneliness for1000students in southwest of China were adopted for this survey, whichaims at analyzing the status and relations of the abovementioned three aspects, so as tofurther identify the impact of Computer-Mediated Communication on the loneliness ofcollege students and find an approach for reducing the loneliness for the scientific andtheoretic basis of guidance of college internet users and the consultancy of collagestudents’ mental health.The result shows:1.College students are keen internet and Computer-Mediated Communication users.Variables affecting Computer-Mediated Communication of college students include thegender, major, grades and origins of the students, which mainly affect the informationcommunications, networking emotional experience, Computer-MediatedCommunication self-disclosure.2.By comparing the mean value and mid-value of six subscales, it can be concludedthat the values of problem-solving, help-seeking and fantasy are higher than the mid-value, which shows higher level of college students in the abovementioned threeaspects. While values of rationalization, retreat and self-criticizing are lower thanmid-value, which shows lower capacity of college students in coping with the threeaspects. Gender plays a major role for help-seeking and rationalization as well. Studentsfrom different grades show differences in self-criticizing and fantasy. Students majored indifferent subjects show distinct differences in problem-solving, self-criticizing, retreatand rationalization. In general college students have more complicated coping styles. Forinstance male students show more instable coping styles, which combine both proactiveand negative styles, while female students are more stable in terms of coping styles.College students in general adopt proactive coping styles, while students from lowergrades show less negative coping style. When refer to majors, students majored inliterature and history show more active coping style, followed by science and engineeringstudents, while art and physical education majors have the most negative coping style dueto negative emotions.3.College students have loneliness levels higher than the mid-value, which meanscollege students are a relatively lonely group. Compared with other demographicalvariables, major and gender have higher impacts on the sense of loneliness, for instancemale students have higher sense of loneliness than female students. Students majored inarts and physical education has the highest sense of loneliness, followed by science andengineering majors. Students majored in literature and history have the lowest sense ofloneliness.4. Computer-Mediated Communication, coping style and loneliness of collegestudents are closely related to one another. For instance, Computer-MediatedCommunication and proactive coping style are negatively correlated. And loneliness isproactively correlated with negative coping style and neutral coping style. While copingstyle is an intermediate for Computer-Mediated Communication and loneliness, thecapacity of joining internet Computer-Mediated Communication of students also impactsthe forming of their coping styles, thus affecting their loneliness via coping styles.
