Report On Simulated Interpreting For The Press Conference On2013China Haining Tide International Expo

Press conference is usually held by social organizations targeting to release information of certain events to the public media. It serves as an important platform for information exchanges at the same time. Press conference which is authoritative, instant, open and specific is an important activity of governmental external publicity. Under the background of globalization, China has been engaging in exchanges with other countries in the world in such aspects as politics, economy and culture. Nowadays interpreters are always needed on site in press conference. The interpreters are required to be good at language skills, mentality adaptation, coping tactics and encyclopedic knowledge. Thus the job as an interpreter for press conference is full of challenges.The author selected the video of the press conference of2013China Haining Tide International Expo as the source material for simulation interpretation practice. This thesis is practice report including the design, preparation, process, analysis of the mistakes and key points and summary of the simulation interpretation. The2013China Haining Tide International press conference was held to release the general information about the second upcoming China Haining Tide International Expo. It has four parts in total including the speech by Mr. Xu Chang who is the vice director of Tourism Bureau of Zhejiang Province, the introduction about the Haining Tide International Expo by Mrs. Hu Yanzi who is the deputy mayor of Haining city, the introduction about the election of China’s Ten Major Economic Trend Figures by Mr. Deng Qingxu who is the deputy Editor in Chief of Sina Website and Q&A section.There are five parts in this thesis. It begins with the design of the simulation interpretation including the design goal, result and concrete plan which makes sure the simulation interpretation would be conducted in order. The second part is about the description of the interpretation task and it gives us an introduction about the background information as well as the preparation before interpretation. Then, in the third part, the author makes an objective evaluation on the whole simulation interpretation through analyzing the questionnaires collected. The fourth part is the key part of this thesis. With the help of the theories and skills of interpretation, it analyzes the cases of mistakes and difficulties during the interpreting process. It mainly uses the "deverbalization" theory and the interpreting skills such as literal translation and paraphrasing in the analysis. The mistakes which are discussed in two aspects are omission and misinterpretation. The difficulties are the interpretation of long sentences and intensive expressions respectively. With the help of the analysis, the author tries to figure out some interpreting strategies and skills respectively and provide experience for future practice. Last comes with the conclusion on this simulation interpretation. The author analyzes the limitations of the simulation interpretation and the qualities that an interpreter should possess in order to make progress in the future. The qualities are responsibility, good listening and comprehension, fluent expression in both source and target languages, good psychological quality and perseverance in learning.
