A Report On Interpreting For The Shandong Provincial Cultural And Art Center Project

This report is based on the interpreter’s experience of interpreting for the Shandong Provincial Cultural and Art Center (Grand Theater) project for a total of20days, in the light of the theory of interpreter’s subjectivity. From March to November of2013, the interpreter was recommended by her supervisor to interpret for the French architects from Richez_Associes in their talks with Chinese government and construction companies. Giving play to the interpreter’s subjectivity is a significant reason for the successful accomplishment of this task.Apart from introduction and conclusion, this report consists of four chapters. The main contents are task description, a brief account of the theory of interpreter’s subjectivity, the manifestation of interpreter’s subjectivity in this project and the client’s feedback and interpreter’s reflections. Subjectivity widely exists on less formal occasions like liaison interpretation and influences the interpreter’s approaches of translation. The theory of interpreter’s subjectivity is applied to analyze the cases of this interpreting task. Examples are given to explain the three manifestations (i.e. visibility, empowerment and non-neutrality) of interpreter’s subjectivity. Through careful preparation, timely explanation and effective teamwork, the interpreter tackled the problems of French accent, architectural vocabulary, misunderstanding and cultural differences. In conclusion, the report stresses the necessity and importance of the interpreter’s subjectivity. Suggestions on how to deal with difficulties encountered in an interpreting task are given to help ensure successful and smooth communication.
