A Report On Interpreting At Shandong Shengguo Machinery Company

As the development of economic globalization and international trade, a growing number of Chinese enterprises have established commercial relations with their counterparts abroad. Therefore, business interpreting plays an increasingly important role in a successful international communication. The report is based on the author’s experience as an interpreter at Shandong Shengguo Machinery Company Limited and her analysis from the theoretical perspective. It includes five parts:task description, a basic introduction on skopos theory, interpreting process description, difficulties and coping strategies, service feedback.In this report, the author first gives a brief description of the interpreting task, including the client---Shandong Shengguo Machinery Company Limited; direct users of the interpreting service, and the basic procedure of the interpreting on that day. Then she introduces skopos theory, mainly the development and its three rules, namely, skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. Under the guidance of skopos theory, the author describes a complete interpreting process, in which she presents her efforts on interpreting of each phase, involving preparation, business negotiation, factory investigation and banquet. In the following chapter, the author discusses the difficulties and coping strategies met with in the interpreting processes, as well as analyzes them from the perspective of skopos theory. Finally, client feedback and the author’s afterthought are provided, in order to give enlightenments for interpreting learning in the future.In conclusion, the report not only places great emphasis on the necessity of practical interpreting experience, but also attaches importance to the combination of practice and theory, thus gives some insights into translation and interpreting learning. There is no doubt practical experience plays an essential part in the process of improving interpreting competence. Meanwhile, theoretical learning is indispensable to make the students majoring in MTI more qualified to be translators or interpreters.
