Mr. Yangyi has written a thesis Rebuilding the Pedigree Chart of Chinese Literature,in this thesis heexplained his concept “Great Literature”. He emphasized the diversity and complexity of the literature. Hethink the literature is inherence, marginality. And it confront, consult and explain with the other subject atthe same time. So we can’t expel the television drama from our study. Especially in contemporary societyhuman gradually farewell printing and enter an era of electronic media. Television drama reflect people’sspiritual world as a text product in culture industry. We should pay more attention on its social influence.Television drama should be our study object.This thesis discuss the GongDou Drama which is a type of television drama. This drama’s backgroundis ancient palace, the story is about harem struggle. It is very hot in China recently. And it possesses sometypical characteristics of culture product. Through study it we can find the development trend of the massculture.This thesis is divided into six parts:The first part is the introduction. It is mainly about the research contents and significance, and itdefines the concept of GongDou Drama.The second part is the first chapter. It analyzes GongDou Drama’s typical narrative pattern, and itstheoretical basis is narratology. The content include three aspects: stylized narrative, typical character,escape and return pattern. The content of first aspect is about the drama’s narrative structure. This structureis a circle, its center is power and the radius is love. The second aspect is about the characters, it’s base onMr. Yangyi’s Chinese Narrative. We will find the character’s setting is triangular structure, and the storyalso set a kind of role with potential energy. The third aspect is about story’s escape and return pattern.The content of the chapter two is about the drama’s multiple themes. There are three quarters: fakeencouragement theme of the GongDou Drama; Gemini theme of love and power; interrogation of humannature. This chapter is base on critical theory of the frankfurt school.The third chapter analyzes GongDou Drama’s multiple discourse mechanism. This chapter includesfour quarters: Utopian imagination’s constructing or disillusion; ambiguous gender narrative; entertainment and subversion of the history; confusion of the moral narration. The key of this chapter is GongDouDrama’s multiple discourse mechanism, through it we can find the fusion of the dominating ideology andthe mass ideology. This chapter is base on critical theory of the frankfurt school and feminist criticism.The fourth chapter summarizes GongDou Drama’s attributes of mass culture. This chapter includesfour quarters: the heteronomy in the market environment; the essential characteristics of GongDouDrama(standardization and fake personality); the accept state of GongDou Drama; the production pattern ofGongDou Drama. The key of this chapter is typical attributes of mass culture and its social influence.The last part mainly analyzes GongDou Drama’s dialectical significance under the perspective of themass culture. We will find negative influence of the mass culture in frankfurt school’s critical theory, but ithas a function of emotional release, especially in social transformation period. That means mass cultureplay a positive role sometimes. As a typical form of mass culture, GongDou drama should be treateddialectically, the epilogue summarizes its meaning from both sides.
