The translation material, which is mainly about the planting system and nationalpolitics within the United States during1780to1860, is the fourteenth chapter,extracted from History of the United States by Charles A. Beard and Mary R. Beard.Liberal translation is mainly used as this translation material belongs to socialsciences. Lexical skills such as the amplification method and syntactic skills such aslong sentence disassembling are used to solve vocabulary and syntax difficulties. Inorder to make the target text to achieve equivalence with the source text in form andcontent, both liberal translation and literal translation are used in rhetoric translation.And translator’s note is used to solve culture difficulties.A translation report, which has four parts including task description, translationprocess, case analysis and conclusion, is finished after the translation of the material.The first part introduces the source and contents of the translation material and alsothe writers briefly. The second part contains preparation work, the solution ofdifficulties in the first translation text and proofreading. The third part is case analysis,in which lots of examples are listed to show how different translation skills are usedin translation and modification. The last part comes the part of conclusion, which isabout the difficulties contained in the translation and their solutions, and also aboutthe translator’s gains and reflections.
