This report is based on the translation of Chapter18The Development of theGreat West from the book History of the United States. It aims to describe the author’sproblems and solutions in the translation process.Lots of preparation is made before translation for the author to grasp the mainideas and enrich her knowledge of the West of the United States, including reading,the analysis of the source text and data collection. The author is guided by theprinciple of faithfulness and smoothness and the methods of literal translation andfree translation.
