| The appreciation of ugliness in art has great important status in thehistory of Chinese culture and art. The word Ugliness has special valuein Chinese art. The attitude towards it was open and tolerant in ancientChina. Ancient Chinese people did not cover up ugliness in art; actually,they often use different forms of artistic approaches to interpret it. Thetheory and practice of the appreciation of ugliness in ancient Chinese arthad developed to a certain height. Nowadays, the spirit of the appreciationof ugliness in art has been passed down from generation to generation forthousands of years. Western culture and art had been learned by someavant-garde artists until the reforming and opening up of Chinese economy.Then many changes have taken place in the appreciation of ugliness inChinese art because of that. And these changes have made a great influencenot only on the production of artistic work, but also on the developmentof Aesthetics.This thesis is based on present situation of Chinese art, with regardto the past whilst looking to the future. In view of Contemporary Art, byinvestigating the theoretical basis of the appreciation of ugliness incontemporary Chinese art, by discovering the changes in the appreciationof ugliness in its status, connotation, nature, function and by exploringthe function and usage of the new media, we can find the reasons why the appreciation of ugliness has been changed, so that problems could beidentified, artists and mass can have a better understanding of uglinessin art. And Chinese artists can finally get the right to express their ownviews on world art affairs. |
