Since the Cultural Revolution, the Chinese society has witnessed a diverse andcomplex makeover transformation that also includes the development in education,particularly in Bildungsroman. Bildungsroman reveal a host of sociologicalphenomenon of that time period, which also demonstrates a profound analysis ofeducators’ living conditions and life experiences. However, there is a lack of literaturecontribution of Bildungsroman nowadays, and the content is predominantly with afocus on Western education novels. Whether it is Chinese or Western, Bildungsromanexists without question. But it is truly the purpose and motif of the Bildungsromanthat distinguishes the two. Chinese Bildungsroman originated from the age betweenQing Dynasty and the Republic of China, and has been rather abundant in quantity.These Bildungsroman share a deep and descriptive portrayal of educators’ lives andcareer development, and usually written in a tragic tone. The educators’ everymovement in the Bildungsroman not only touches the readers’ hearts, but also mirrorsthe social background of that age. The trajectory of an educator’s life is not restrictedto the literature itself, but also reflects a social issue. Education is reality. Further,education is hope. It is today and tomorrow. This essay is based on the WesternBildungsroman’s theory of analysis, concentrating on Chinese Bildungsroman writtenin periods of the pre-founding, during and after Cultural Revolution, and post-90’s.The introduction briefly explains the development of Bildungsroman, elaborates onthe origin of Bildungsroman, the differences between Western and OrientalBildungsroman, and a few influential novels written in the three periods stated above.The Chapter One introduces the social background of Bildungsroman. Chapter Twoargues and explains the educator’s image according to various time periods. ChapterThree dissects the educator’s character and its influence. The final chapter analyzesthoughts that Bildungsroman incurs on educational systems. Therefore, the essay willevaluate the life experiences of educators in modern and contemporaryBildungsroman, with a tragic perspective.
