| With the fast development of world economy, the trend of globalization isirreversible. After entering into WTO, foreign trade and international businesscooperation between China and foreign countries are more and more frequent. Businessnegotiation is an important step in foreign investment and a major means for tradingparties to settle differences, and reach fair and mutual beneficial deals. Under suchcircumstances, the need for qualified interpreters is constantly on the rise because theyare also indispensable contributors to the success of negotiations. Similarly to otherinterpretation, business interpretation is also a cross-lingual, cross-national andcross-cultural communicative activity but it has distinctive features, especially for thesubject of this dissertation-interpreting in international business negotiation (IIBN). Infact, it can be viewed as an inter-discipline of English language and internationalbusiness, which requires the interpreter to have both profound linguistic competence andadequate business-related knowledge, even negotiating skills. As a newly emerginginterpreting branch, the research on interpreting strategies of international businessnegotiation in academia remains preliminary and inadequate. Based on a large number ofsecondary sources, the author of the dissertation conducted a relatively comprehensiveand systematic research from tactics used in interpreting practice.The dissertation consists of three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.Part one includes review of the research, the aim of this dissertation, and itsapplication value and significance.Part two is the main body, divided into three chapters:Chapter One provides a step-by-step introduction to negotiation, businessnegotiation, and international business negotiation as well as its category and principle tofollow.Chapter Two discusses interpreting in international business negotiation, mainlyfrom its necessity and significance, features, basic requirements for business interpreters,during which the author emphasized the important role of psychological quality. And thecriteria for the quality assessment of IIBN are also discussed in this chapter.Chapter Three, on strategies used in interpreting practice, explains the interpretingtactics adopted in international business negotiation from6points because meeting the general requirements mentioned before is not enough to be an excellent negotiatinginterpreter.Conclusion sums up the whole dissertation, points out IIBN is a highly demandingjob on both interpreting skills and business knowledge, appeals to the academia to attachmore importance to the standardization and professionalization of this interpreting branch.And the author hopes the examples employed in this dissertation could provideassistance to those who want to serve this industry. However, there is limitation on thedepth of this research due to the insufficient on-spot experience of the author and thedifficulty in collecting first hand sources because of confidentiality and sensitivity ofbusiness data and information. Therefore, further study in this field needs to do by morescholars and practitioners in the future. |
