English major in local universities is an important approach to foster qualified English teachers. The practical needs from students and society and English teachers’own needs of self-development set higher demands on English teachers in primary and secondary schools. Meanwhile, knowledge-oriented English major graducates of local normal universities who accomplished their curriculum study based on national syllabus are facing more and more social changllenges. Therefore, it can be practically and strategically significant in enhancing the fundamental education to study the quo status and problems of curriculum design and understand how to improve it.This study utilizes the related theories of curriculum design and needs analysis, as well as the combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis; the methodologies of questionnaire survey and interview had been used in this research. General analysis was conducted on the scheme of English majors in Yulin Normal University, questionnaires and interviews were conducted among43graduates of English major2009,24English teachers of Yulin Normal University and14English head teachers from secondary schools to investigate their satisfaction and expectations about curriculum design of English major. The findings show:1. On cultivation objectives and categories of curriculum design:Firstly, from students, teachers and employing units’perspective, there are excessive total amount courses for English majors in YNU, So does excessive professional knowledge-oriented courses while deficient skill-oriented courses for English majors. Meanwhile, problem of several repetitive professional courses should be noticed. Secondly, based on students and teachers’feedback, the current proportion of pedagogical courses is relatively low; students’teaching skill should be improved. What is more, some students are lack of awareness of general education courses study.2. On teaching practice arrangement:according to students, teachers and employers’ opinions, ineffective arrangement of single approach teaching practice is one of the main problems of English major curriculum design in Yulin Normal University(YNU). According to the research findings, this thesis puts forward the following suggestions on curriculum design for English major of YNU:1. On cultivation objectives and categories of curriculum design:Firstly, rearrange excessive total amount of altogether76courses for English majors, keep a balance between excessive professional knowledge-oriented courses and deficient skill-oriented courses, and integrate several repetitive professional courses properly. Secondly, increase the proportion of pedagogical courses in a scientific way and emphasize teaching skills training of students. What is more, reinforce students’ awareness of general education courses study.2. On teaching practice arrangement:Establish diversified long-term teaching practice activities.These findings offer a reliable data basis for local normal universities to indentify the correct educational objectives of English major, to implement effective teaching measures, and to foster qualified local English teachers that is conducive to achieving the educational objectives of cultivating English talents in local normal universities.
