Abstract/Summary:
Temporal adverbs, which are in large number and fall into many different types, are an important means of expressing time in both Chinese and Korean languages. As a distinct type, temporal adverbs showing temporal continuity deserve more research attention. Linguists suggest a widely accepted circumscription for temporal adverbs showing temporal continuity. Basing on this circumscription, the thesis makes a comparison between Chinese and Korean adverbs indicating temporal continuity on a synchronic level. The thesis falls into five chapters:The first chapter is an introduction, describing the purpose, significance, subject and scope of the research, along with the status of previous studies and the source of materials used in the thesis. This chapter introduces the reason for choosing the topic, the main frame of the thesis as well as the previous research results, which provide the theoretical basis for the thesis.The second chapter analyzes semantic features of Chinese and Korean temporal adverbs under issue. Basing on previous studies, with the help of definitions given by different kinds of dictionaries, the author makes an analysis of specific example sentences, summarizes the semantic features of Chinese and Korean adverbs under issue and makes a comparison to identify similarities and differences between them.The third chapter compares the syntactic performance of Chinese and Korean temporal adverbs showing temporal continuity. By analyzing the specimen, the author discusses the position of these adverbs and the limiting factor for collocation when choosing certain verbs or adjectives. Then the author studies the regular patterns for conjunction of temporal adverbs under issue.The fourth chapter is pragmatic analysis. The author divides sentences according to their mood, and analyzes the difference of using temporal adverbs under issue in different sentence types. The use of these adverbs in oral and spoken languages is also explored and difference generated as a result of different language styles in found. Finally, basing on the semantic and syntactic research outcomes, the thesis makes an analysis of pragmatic functions in specific contexts.The last chapter is conclusion. The thesis is concluded and arguments summarized. The author also points out the shortcomings of this research.
