Style Translation Of Mo Yan’s Big Breasts And Wide Hips

Mo Yan，a famous contemporary Chinese writer, who owns high reputationoverseas. On October11,2012, he was awarded The Nobel Prize in Literature for thereason “with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary”Big Breasts and Wide Hips is one of his most representative works, since itspublication, the book has attracted wide attention from influential media such as NewYorker and The Washington Post, as well as scholars and sinologists, thus it has set agood example for other Chinese literary works to enter foreign markets. Translationplays an essential role in the process of Chinese literature reaching out to the world,the translation quality is directly related to the oversea reputation of authors and theiroriginal works. Howard Goldblatt carries great weight in the success of Big Breastsand Wide Hips aboard.However, studies on this work are mostly conducted from literary perspective,previous studies on its corresponding English version are limited on the direction oftranslation theory, and much less translation research has been done from theperspective of stylistic, which is a kind of regret considering that it’s a literary workcontaining great stylistic features.This study attempts to use literary stylistics approach to analyze the novel BigBreasts and Wide Hips and its translation version from its lexical level, syntacticallevel and rhetorical level, to explore stylistic features of both works and theireffectiveness and impact, to reveal the translator’s successes and defects of stylereproduction in the translation process, to point out that Goldblatt has generallyachieved style equivalence in reproducing stylistic features of the original work.Meanwhile,“deceptive equivalence” does find in some translations for Goldblatt’slack of awareness of style markers and fail to reflect them faithfully. Admittedly, theoverall quality of the translation shows the competence of a translation master. Thisthesis argues that stylistics approach can scientifically and practically be applied totranslating fiction style.
