Since the20th century, as the emergence of immigrants tide, we have entered acentury of migrants. For immigrants’ departure from home, they have split its cultureattribute and can’t adapt to the new culture. Therefore, it lead to the anxiety andconfusion on its own identity in the multicultural collision. At the same time, literarycreation has become the main sustenance of immigrants writing their own confusionand seeking soul belonging. Immigration literature has entered people’s horizonsgradually in this context, and become a global cultural phenomenon.Ishiguro is the representative figure of contemporary migrant writer. Because ofthe deep influence of Japanese and British culture, Ishiguro has a deep sense of crisisof his own identity ownership. So his works also reflect the identity crisis under themulti-culture collision and exploration and pursuit of their own identity. Based on thetheory of multiculturalism, this paper analyzes the protagonist of Ishiguro works withthe method of close reading, explores the identity crisis which the protagonist is facedwith and describes the escape and pursuit of identity belonging.The paper includes three parts: introduction, text and epilogue.The introduction part mainly introduces the Ishiguro and his creation,multi-cultural theory, domestic and abroad research status as well as the paper researchperspectives and research value.The text includes three chapters. The first chapter analyses the identity crisiswhich Ono Soji and Stevens are facing from the aspects of social identity andself-identity.From the aspects of social identity, the hero can’t continue the magnificentpast in the professional and social activities. Both of the respected British butler andthe famous painter are faced with the established loss of identity and collapse.Thesecond chapter carries on the content of the first chapter, this part discusses the herochose an unreliable memory and self-deception to evade its own crisis subjectively inthe face of the identity crisis, and the hero is reluctant to face the lost of its ownidentity psychologically. The third chapter carries on the idea of the second chapter,and has explored the hero’s change from never be willing to face to the active search after inner ambivalent. And in the pursuit of homes and self, the hero finds his ownidentity orientation, disrupts the identity crisis of anxiety and confusion, reconstructsthe identity.The conclusion part summarizes the full text. As an immigrant writer in themulticultural background, Ishiguro analyzes the migration from immigration in the ageof fear and discomfort after lost identity starting from their own feelings deeply. Inaddition, he presents to the readers the panic and struggle of a worm and marginalfigures in seeking to identity positioning, and the course of action from negative escapeto taking the initiative to pursue. At the same time, the work embodies the author’spositive outlook on life and pious pursuit for a better life.
