A Comparative Study Of Narrative Techniques Between Chekhov And Carol Oates

the lady with the pet dog was a short story written by Chekhov in1899. Joyce Carol Oates rewrote the same name short story the lady with the pet-dog in1972. This paper tries to compare Chekhov and Oates’s same name short story in classical narratology theory, from focalization, narrative structure, narrative time and space. It tries to find the different effect through comparing narrative s method. Female images in Chekhov’s work was written as Objectification through writer’s effective control. But Oates’ s based on female experience and perspective made the female images true and self-conscious. Through comparing Chekhov and Oates’s different narrative method to explain Chekhov created female image as comment object. However, Oates stands on self gender conscious to explain female so that images present as struggling to survive.This paper has five parts, the first one is introduction, introducing research status and significance. The second part is introducing writers. The third part is comparison about narrative method of Chekhov and Oates mainly from structure, focalization, time and space. Chekhov uses linear narrative structure, describes story fluently by story time. And he uses the third-person whole perspective mode, observe the story from male perspective. Public space is used most to show main character’s psychological state. What differs from linear narrative, Oates uses flash-back way.that puts highlight in the beginning makes plot ups and downs. The topic work, with changing of the main character’s sex, the focus has apparently difference. Oates chooses the third-person limited perspective means readers understand Anna deeply and truly from her thinking and emotion. Through space, Oates pays attention to time sequence and privacy space. The third part is female image in different narrative strategy. Last part is conclusion. According to the analysis, it explains male writers creates female image to make male sense and value. But in female writers’work is in order to find the survive road.
